2017 Season Look-Ahead

Hello, once again. With the preseason Coaches Poll just released, and the AP due in about 2 weeks, I thought I'd start looking ahead to the 2017 season.

2007: The Bizarro Season

When someone uses the argument that "every game matters" in college football, no season is a better example of that than 2007.  That year, from the very first week, no team was safe, especially if they were ranked #2.  It was an exciting - and ever changing - road to the national title, with new twists and turns every week.

Still, ten years later, I'm not even sure if everyone is aware of just how crazy that season was.  SB Nation calls it the best college football season ever.  It certainly is a standard that I have measured every season since against.

I'm starting a new feature at the blog, where I post tweets that catch my eye in relation to college football.  I imagine this will be a bigger feature the closer we get to the actual season.

National Title-Winning Coaches Update

First off, I commend Bob Stoops for identifying when the time was right for him to leave and congratulate him on an outstanding career with Oklahoma. He’s taken a few “character chances” in the last 3-4 years, but he’s generally been one of the good guys in the sport. Best of wishes moving forward, Big Game Bob!

That being said, we are down to 4 active coaches who have won a national title. Back in January, I promised I would break down the head-to-head history. With Bob’s retirement, my job just got a little easier 😊.

An analysis of Mark Richt's tenure at Georgia

To the casual college football observer, Mark Richt is a respectable head coach.  He coached the Georgia Bulldogs for 15 years, and only had one losing season (a 6-7 mark caused by a bowl loss).  Nine of those seasons had 10 or more wins.

But one thing Richt always gets dinged for in a coaching discussion is his inability to get Georgia to the national title, and even the inability to win the SEC championship, even though Georgia was in the perceived weaker SEC East.

I thought I would take a look at Richt's tenure at Georgia just to see if any of those message board claims have any merit.
