Now that the season is over, we now know that the real life championship game is set between two teams from the same division, after a complicated tiebreaker procedure.
Pac-12 North Champion: Washington Huskies (7-2)
Washington was tied with Oregon at 7-2, but had the head-to-head tiebreaker.
Pac-12 South Champion: USC Trojans (8-1)
USC clinched the division with the best record. No tiebreakers required.

There was no reason to rush to eliminate divisions this year, as the #2 team still has a 7-2 record. Plus, the divisionless format pushed the conference to a rematch, whereas the divisional setup would have featured a new matchup.
I hope that the Pac-12 and all of the other conferences in the process of eliminating divisions take the time to more fully think out the tiebreaker procedures, or adjust their schedules in a way to allow as much of the decisions to be made on the field as possible.
