2023-2024 Conference Scorecard

We are in the midst of possibly the greatest realignment in college football history, and so many people are having a difficult time remembering which conferences contain which teams.  It also doesn't help that among these institutions of higher learning, the numbers that are part of the conference names now have absolutely no bearing on the number of members in their conference.

Since we have passed the deadline for teams to declare their intentions for the 2024 season, I present the scorecard for the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

EDIT:  I thought we were past the deadline, but I guess that only applies to leaving conferences that are still viable for 2024.  Still, here's the scorecard for 2023 and 2024.

ACC
2022 membership:  14.5
2023 membership:  14.5
2024 membership:  17.5
(Notre Dame still has commitment issues in football.)

Additions:  Cal, Stanford, SMU

SEC
2022 membership:  14
2023 membership:  14
2024 membership:  16

Additions:  Texas and Oklahoma join in 2024.

Big Ten
2022 membership:  14
2023 membership:  14
2024 membership:  18

Additions:  USC, UCLA, Washington, and Oregon join in 2024.

Big 12
2022 membership:  10
2023 membership:  14
2024 membership:  16

Additions:  UCF, Houston, BYU, and Cincinnati all join in 2023 while Colorado, Arizona, Arizona State, and Utah join in 2024.
Subtractions:  Texas, Oklahoma

Pac-12
2022 membership:  12
2023 membership:  12
2024 membership:  2

Subtractions:  USC, UCLA, Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Arizona, Arizona State, Utah, Cal, and Stanford will all leave after the 2023 season.

DIVISIONS AND CHAMPIONSHIP GAME FORMATS

By the 2024 season, none of the Power 5 conferences will have divisions, and all of the conference championship games will feature the top two teams in each conference.

2021 was the final season of divisions for the Pac-12 (North vs. South).
2022 was the final season of divisions for the ACC (Atlantic vs. Coastal).
2023 will be the final season of divisions for the SEC and Big Ten (East vs. West).

The Big 12 has not had divisions since they dropped down to 10 teams.

Based on the current standings, the Pac-12 will not be able to have a championship game beyond 2023, unless they consider the regular season matchup between Oregon State and Washington State to be a de facto championship.
