2020 NY6 Thoughts and Reflections

Despite all of the changes and uniqueness of 2020, some things remain a constant. One of those things: the College Football Playoff.

Championship Weekend Preview - and Update

Without even playing, we already have some interesting developments in this weekend's Conference Championship Game action.

12/15 Rankings and Final 2020 Look-Ahead

Anything with "final" and "2020" has to be a good thing, right?!?  Even in this crazy messed-up year, it's still bittersweet to be so close to the end of another college football season.

2020 Week 15 wrap up

Two more conference game spots got clinched this week without games being played.  And who would have thought that the final Pac-12 spot would have gotten clinched due to a noon game?

Now updated with notes about possible replacement teams for championship games, if needed.

Keep watching for any further updates if teams are unavailable to play.

2020 Week 14 wrap-up

Nothing should surprise us any more in 2020.  The ACC cancelled some games and ended up clinching their championship game this weekend.  Even they were getting tired of the COVID version of the #goacc Wheel of Destiny.

Mid-Week NY6 Addendum

It's not every season that a ranked matchup gets scheduled with 2 days notice. Especially one with some fascinating post-season possibilities! Yet, 2020 gives us a gift!

2020 Week 13 wrap up

I admit I took a step or two back from football this weekend.  With VT being on a bye during Thanksgiving weekend, I took the opportunity to focus on other tasks around the house, such as holiday decorating.  It also didn't help that all sorts of cancellations and postponements were coming fast and furious.

And then the ultimate irony that the Commonwealth Cup could have ended up on its traditional weekend, as the uva/FSU game was postponed due to FSU issues.

CFP Rankings Reaction & Look-Ahead

It took a few more weeks than usual, but we're now at the point where the "only rankings that matter" are out for weekly release.  And as always, there were some great takeaways.

2020 Week 12 wrap up

For the record, I like the divisional structure.  It's easier to follow, especially in this crazy season.

There's probably a lot of information I'm glossing over or math I'm not completing.  There are probably more teams eliminated than I have showing here.  I'm pretty sure not all of the "needs" categories are correct, since winning percentages are coming into play in all conferences.

2020 Week 11 wrap up

I hate to say it, but it's getting close to the point where I'm almost ready to throw in the towel on this whole exercise of following conference races.  Between the Pac-12 barely being able to start, the Big Ten not allowing any flexibility, and VT dropping some games they shouldn't, Sunday mornings are getting a little rough.

Honestly, this list is a mess, and I'm probably missing some things.  But it's not worth the mental gymnastics to figure out if a 3 or 4 loss team still can win their conference, when in reality, one game next weekend will fix that for us.

2020 College Football Post-Season: First Look

Depending on how you look at this VERY unique college football season, you might argue that it's halfway over.

2020 Week 9 wrap up

I believe the Big Ten might be the conference to provide a circle of suck this year.

It's the last week without the full P5 playing.

2020 Week 8 wrap up

I think Michigan State is officially the worst team in the country.  They lost a conference game to Rutgers.  Welcome back, Big Ten.

2020 Week 7 wrap up

Every team achieve bowl eligibility this week.  The Big Ten returns next week.  And I'm wondering exactly when the Big 12 plays, because they don't seem to have more than a couple of games each week.

Championship of Life update

In all of the craziness of 2020 and COVID, we almost forgot about one of the most meaningful traditions of college football - the Championship of Life.  That link (and also the one on the right side of this blog screen) will show the full story and standings of the championship.

But in these early weeks of a shortened delayed season, we've already seen the championship change hands multiple times.  In fact, in 2020, no team has been able to successfully defend their hold on the Championship of Life.

Thanks to LSU's national championship and the SEC's decision to only play conference games, the CoL is guaranteed to remain in the SEC during the regular season, with the only chance of escaping to come in bowl season, whatever that might look like.

2020 Week 6 wrap up

We're finally getting some separation at the top of the conferences.  Since everyone is playing mostly-conference schedules, we're seeing some historic records where teams are carrying unusually low win percentages this early in the season.

2020 Week 5 wrap-up

We are now at the point of the season where we can say things are getting crazy due to what's happening on the field.

2020 Week 4 wrap-up

The SEC is back, the Big 12 is back in conference play, the Big Ten and Pac-12 will be back soon, and more importantly, Virginia Tech is back and they brought a can of whoop-ass!

Week 3 Wrap-Up

More conference games, and more conferences.  The Big Ten is coming back in October.

One thing I noticed with the ACC's divisionless schedule is that now it's harder to root for or against certain teams.  In any other year, I would have been rooting for Syracuse over Pitt, because it would help all of the other Coastal teams.  However this year, it's too early to tell which outcome would help the teams I prefer.

2020 Week 2 wrap up

It's been a while, folks, and we've come back to a strange world.  I don't need to rehash how massively screwed up 2020 has been and continues to be as we start the college football season.  I will say that I will continue to number the weeks based on the original form of the schedule.  Therefore, the games of September 12 were part of week 2.

We've got all new criteria to work around this year as every Power 5 conference changed their schedules.  The Big Ten and Pac-12 cancelled (although maybe they'll reconsider?).  The SEC ditched non-conference games and went to a 10 game conference schedule (up from 8).  The Big 12 is still playing 9 conference games, and only adding one non-conference game during the month of September.  The ACC probably has the biggest set of changes, as they increased to 10 conference games (from 8) plus one non-conference game, and ditched their divisions when they added Notre Dame as a full member for this season.

And that's all before we have to worry about cancellations and rescheduling games.
