As I mentioned last year, I prefer divisions in conferences, and the main reason is that it guarantees that every team in the conference has played at least one of the two teams in the championship game.
Let's see what kind of representation we had in 2025, and also how it compared to 2024.
ACC
Duke vs. uva
(rematch of a regular season game)
Three schools played both teams - Cal, UNC, Wake Forest
Eight schools played one of the two - Clemson, GT, NC State, Syracuse, FSU, Louisville, Stanford, VT
Four teams did not play either team - Boston College, Miami, Pitt, SMU
Total representation - 13/17 = 76.4%
2024 representation - 13/17 = 76.4% (same)
Miami also did not play either ACCCG team in 2024.
SEC
Georgia vs. Alabama
(rematch of a regular season game)
Two schools played both teams - Auburn and Tennessee
Ten schools played one of the two - Florida, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi State, Missouri, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Texas, and Vanderbilt
Two teams did not play either team - Arkansas and Texas A&M
Total representation - 14/16 = 87.5%
2024 representation - 13/16 = 81.25% (6.25% increase in 2025)
Big Ten
Indiana vs. Ohio State
Five schools played both teams - Illinois, Penn State, Purdue, Wisconsin, UCLA
Eight schools played one of the two - Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Oregon, Rutgers, Washington
Three teams did not play either team - Nebraska, Northwestern, USC
Total representation - 15/18 = 83.3%
2024 representation - 13/18 = 72.2% (11.1% increase in 2025)
Nebraska and Northwestern also did not play either championship team in 2024.
Big 12
Texas Tech vs. BYU
(rematch of a regular season game)
Three schools played both teams - UCF, Utah, and WVU
Ten schools played one of the two - Arizona, Arizona State, Cincinnati, Colorado, Houston, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, TCU
One team did not play either - Baylor
Total representation - 15/16 = 93.75%
2024 representation - 14/16 = 87.5% (6.25% increase in 2025)
Overall, the conferences did the same or better in representation. Of course, that is completely dependent on which teams were selected for the games.
Had the opponents in the SEC and Big 12 title games not met in the regular season, then it would have been possible for both of those conferences to achieve 100% representation. At best, the ACC could have only achieved 15/17 (88.2%).
