week 2 recap

You may have noticed I didn't post a list of games to watch for week 2.  That's because I didn't find a lot going on that had any significance going into the week.  However, week 2 had plenty of action that became apparent while watching.

One key to the day was weather delays.  Probably the most notable was the two delays in the Florida State/Savannah State game that mercifully pulled the plug on the game in the third quarter, 55-0.  Still, it would have been nice to see if FSU could have covered the 70 point spread.

The biggest shocker of the day was ULM beating Arkansas in overtime.  Say what you want about the ACC in non-conference play -- at least they don't lose to the Sun Belt.  That's right, an SEC team lost to a team from a conference that the SEC funds so they can have a second cupcake on the schedule without resorting to FCS.

Meanwhile, I wonder why ESPN is putting the Big East on Thursday nights this month.  The Pitt/Cincinnati game was horrible, and the stands were empty at the end.

I also learned that I need to stop listening to certain blogs at ESPN.  They convinced me that Miami had a shot at upsetting K-State, and they nearly convinced me that Duke had a shot at Stanford.

Duke lost worse to a Luck-less Stanford than VT lost to Luck running the score up on them.

It's still extremely early, but there are a few conference races that are shaping up.

ACC
Atlantic:  Everyone still controls their destiny.  Boston College is the closest to losing that, since they did lose to Miami.  Since it's a inter-division loss, BC can win out in conference, and have all of the tie-breakers.  Not very likely, though.  Only two teams from this division have played conference games, and both have been across division lines.
Coastal:  UNC is ineligible.  VT is the only team in the conference with a divisional win.  Everyone except GT controls their destiny.  Right now, GT still needs VT to lose twice to have a chance.

SEC
East:  Missouri and Vanderbilt both have divisional losses.  Everyone else controls.
West:  Auburn has a divisional loss.  Texas A&M has a conference loss, but it came from the East.

Big Ten
Penn State and Ohio State are both ineligible to play in the title game, but they can win their division.  In that case, #2 would go to the title game.  Other than that, no conference games for anyone, so it's still wide open.

Big 12 and Pac-12
No conference games yet.

Big East
Only one conference game, so Cincy has the edge.
