Well, there's gonna be some fight in the college football world this year. A few upsets got into final scoreboard. Still, I'm hesitant to consider anyone truly out of the running for the playoffs after only three weeks. Unless they're 0-3, in which case, they probably won't be getting any better.
We had more conference games this week than either of the two previous weeks, so some of the conference races are getting started, but most teams are still at 0-0 in conference.
The ACC got the Wheel of Destiny spinning in Charlottesville today. UVA somehow figured out that they needed more points than their opponent, in this case Louisville.
Everyone still controls their destiny in the ACC, since all 3 conference games played so far have been cross-divisional. However, since Louisville, BC, and Miami have been on the wrong end of those games, they lose their safety net for the moment. I hate to say it, but UVA is the only team undefeated in conference play at the moment.
The SEC made things more interesting, as they actually had two divisional matchups in the same division. South Carolina beat Georgia, avoiding the biggest hole anyone would have created in this young season. And somehow Kentucky took Florida to 3OT, but lost.
Florida is in control. South Carolina and Vanderbilt have cross-divisional losses, which technically keeps them in control.
Georgia requires another South Carolina loss to gain control back, while Kentucky needs Florida to lose two.
In the SEC West, the only team with a loss is Arkansas, who will need two Auburn losses to gain control.
The B1G has only staged one conference game, and that was Penn State beating Rutgers. With the NCAA lifting the sanctions early, Penn State has actually jumped into the conference race, and has interestingly enough become the first team with a conference win. Both teams are in the East division.
We'll have to come back to the Pac-12, since Arizona State and Colorado are still playing as I write this. Other than that, the only other conference game has been the cross-divisional USC/Stanford matchup from last week.
Finally, in the Big 12 round robin, we have Kansas State over Iowa State as the only game so far.
In conclusion, we still don't have a lot of movement in the conference picture outside of the SEC East, but I'm looking forward to seeing week 4 open it up. The ACC gives us the annual Techmo Bowl (GT at VT), which used to be the de facto Coastal championship. The Pac-12 and Big 12 will both be going deep into conference play, as at least nine teams between the two conferences have already wrapped up non-conference play.
