2023 Week 8 Wrap up

Virginia Tech gets a bye week and I take a Saturday off to do other activities, and I find that football has fallen into madness.

Remember that any talk of records and being undefeated strictly refers to conference records.

ACC Wheel of Destiny
Florida State (5-0)
W:  BC, Clemson, VT, Syracuse, Duke
UNC (3-1)
   W:  Pitt, Syracuse, Miami
   L:  uva

Louisville (3-1)
W:  Georgia Tech, BC, NC State
   L:  Pitt

Duke (2-1)
   W:  Clemson, NC State
   L:  FSU
Virginia Tech (2-1)
   W:  Pitt, WF
   L:  FSU

Boston College (2-2)
   W:  uva, GT
   L:  FSU, Louisville
Georgia Tech (2-2)
   W:  Wake Forest, Miami
   L:  Louisville, BC
Clemson (2-3)
   W:  Syracuse, WF
   L:  Duke, FSU, Miami
NC State (1-2)
   W:  uva
   L:  Louisville, Duke

Miami (1-2)
   W:  Clemson
   L: GT, UNC
uva (1-2)
   W:  UNC
   L:  NC State, BC
Wake Forest (1-3)
   W:  Pitt
   L: GT, Clemson, VT
Pitt (1-3)
   W:  Louisville
   L:  UNC, VT, WF

Syracuse (0-3)
   L:  Clemson, UNC, FSU

So much for a logjam of undefeated teams.  Now we let the #goacc chaos rain on the 1 and 2 losses teams hoping to get that second seed in the ACCCG.

SEC
East
Controls destiny:
-Georgia (4-0)
   W:  USCe, Kentucky, Vandy
-Florida (3-1)
   W:  Tennessee, Vandy, South Carolina
   L:  Kentucky

-Missouri (3-1)
   W:  Vandy, Kentucky, South Carolina

Needs help:
-Tennessee (2-2) needs 2 Florida losses and an additional Georgia loss.
   W:  South Carolina
   L:  Florida
-Kentucky (2-2) needs losses by Georgia (3), Missouri (2), and Florida.
   W:  Vandy, Florida
   L:  Georgia, Missouri

Out of contention:
-South Carolina (1-4)
   L:  Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, Missouri
-Vanderbilt (0-4)
   L:  Kentucky, Missouri, Florida, Georgia

It is mathematically impossible to force a multi-team tie at 4-4.  For that to happen, Georgia would need to lose out, giving a fourth win to both Florida and Missouri.  Then both of those teams would need to lose out, but the problem is that they play each other in November, so therefore, the division champion will have at least five wins.

West
Controls destiny:
-Alabama (5-0)
W:  Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Texas A&M, Arkansas

Needs help:
-Ole Miss (3-1) needs 2 Alabama losses.
   W:  LSU, Arkansas, Auburn
   L:  Alabama
-LSU (3-1) needs an Ole Miss loss.
   W:  Arkansas, Auburn
   L:  Ole Miss
-Texas A&M (2-2) needs 3 Alabama losses.
   W:  Auburn, Arkansas
   L:  Alabama
-Mississippi State (1-2) needs three losses by Alabama.
   W:  Arkansas
   L:  Alabama

Out of contention:
-Auburn (0-4)
L:  Texas A&M, LSU, Ole Miss
-Arkansas (0-5)
L:  LSU, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Alabama, Mississippi State

Big Ten
East
Controls destiny:
-Michigan (5-0)
   W:  Rutgers, Indiana, Michigan State
-Ohio State (4-0)
   W:  Indiana, Maryland, Penn State

Needs help:
-Penn State (3-1) needs 2 OSU losses.
   L:  Ohio State
-Maryland (2-2) needs 3 OSU losses, plus an additional loss by Michigan.
   W:  Michigan State, Indiana
   L:  Ohio State
-Rutgers (3-2) needs 3 Michigan losses, plus an additional loss by OSU.
   W:  Michigan State, Indiana
   L:  Michigan

Out of contention:
-Indiana (0-4)
L:  Ohio State, Maryland, Michigan, Rutgers
-Michigan State (0-4)
   L:  Maryland, Rutgers, Michigan

Do Indiana and Michigan State have any chance of forcing a 5-4 tie at the top?  The short answer is "not with each other", as they will face off in November.  If Michigan loses out to go 5-4, then that means OSU will get a fifth win.  We are looking at a minimum of a three way tie involving Michigan, OSU, and the Indiana/MSU winner.  Indiana has already lost to the rest of the division except Penn State, so they just don't have any tiebreakers to use.  Michigan State has lost enough that I'm confident in saying they're out of the race.

West
Controls destiny:
-Wisconsin (3-1)
   W:  Purdue, Illinois
   L:  Iowa

-Minnesota (2-2)
   W:  Nebraska, Iowa
   L:  Northwestern

Needs help:
-Iowa (3-2) need a Minnesota loss.
   W:  Purdue, Wisconsin
   L:  Minnesota
-Nebraska (2-2) needs a Minnesota loss.
   W:  Illinois, Northwestern
   L:  Minnesota
-Northwestern (1-3) needs two Minnesota losses.
   W:  Minnesota
   L:  Nebraska

-Purdue (1-3) needs losses by Wisconsin (3) and Iowa (2).
   W:  Illinois
   L:  Wisconsin, Iowa

   L:  Purdue, Nebraska, Wisconsin
